I had the great pleasure of meeting Denis Law's family when we were launching our book about Scottish football legends. For me there is no doubt that Denis was the best male Scottish football player ever. And many experts have agreed. Sir Alex Ferguson said that Denis Law was thee finest player that Scotland has ever produced and one of the greatest the world has ever seen. Pele, whom most people say is Brazil’s best ever player, said that Denis was the only British player good enough to play for Brazil. And his team mate, the legendary George Best said, “Denis Law, simply the greatest.” He’s the only Scot to have won FIFAs Ballon D’Or football player of the year award.

Denis Law was a great goal scorer.  He was a showman who inspired everyone he played with. His teammates adored him, people who played against him were scared of him and the fans worshiped him.  He wasn’t like anyone else. He was a free spirit, clever but a bit mischievous, full of class and clout. His story is a wonderful tale of a young Aberdeen boy who rose from a humble start to be one of the best football players the world has ever seen.

In 1958 Denis played his first game for Scotland against Wales. He was only 18 and he scored the first of his 30 goals for his country. He’s still joint top scorer for Scotland, alongside Kenny Dalgleish. For its 50th Anniversary UEFA asked every member association to pick their most outstanding player from 1954-2003. Denis Law was the player chosen by the SFA.

In July 1962 Manchester United signed Denis for a record fee of £115,000. Denis was an instant success at Old Trafford because he helped turn Manchester United into a winning team. In 1963 they won the FA Cup and the league as well. Denis finished the season as tap goal scorer. The fans called him ‘The king of Old Trafford’ and ‘The Lawman’.

But Denis was more than a football player, he was a devoted family man. I'll never forget the stories his family told me about what he was like as a husband and a father. He will be sorely missed. But his legacy will live on. RIP 'Lawman'.
